Oculoplasty is a sub-specialty within ophthalmology that involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the eyelids, orbit (eye socket), tear ducts, and surrounding facial structures. Oculoplastic surgeons are trained in both ophthalmology and plastic surgery, and they use surgical and non-surgical techniques to address a wide range of conditions, including droopy eyelids, eyelid malposition, tear duct obstructions, and facial trauma affecting the eyes and surrounding structures.
Common oculoplastic procedures include eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), which can be used to address excess skin or fat on the upper or lower eyelids, as well as ptosis surgery, which involves lifting droopy eyelids. Oculoplastic surgeons may also perform tear duct surgery to address blockages or infections in the tear drainage system, as well as orbital surgery to repair fractures or address tumors or other growths in the eye socket. Non-surgical treatments, such as Botox injections, may also be used to address certain oculoplastic conditions.
